About the ArtistPerspective - My interest in art began as a child living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In first grade, the Lincoln Community School held a drawing competition for which I took first place. The subject was Christopher Columbus' voyage of 1492. Argentina was a country rich with history, European art and architecture, and a Gaucho culture that was fascinating to me as a young boy. In fourth grade my family moved to Mexico City, Mexico. There, Mexico's Aztec and Spanish heritage surrounded me. I was exposed to Mexico's diverse and vibrant folk art, handicrafts and fine art. I had an equally enriching experience working in the Arabian Gulf---taking in the elegance of Islamic architecture and ornamentation, and learning the beautiful forms of Arabic calligraphy. These experiences, as well as my travels, allow me to see those things that are uniquely American --- what distinguishes the United States from other countries, and American culture, history and values from those of the rest of the world. Artistry - My experience as a creative professional has been extraordinary in that I have successfully managed to traverse several career paths. I have worked on periodicals, corporate identities, catalogs, and packaging. I have worked in advertising agencies large and small, design studios, corporations, and consulting firms. I have worked in English, Arabic and Spanish. From it, I have learned many different approaches to creative problem solving and many different execution techniques. My strengths as a designer include a keen eye for composition, and a love and sensitivity for type. Diverse Interests - In my work as a designer, I endeavor to create solutions that are appropriate and capture the spirit of the subject. Both my graphic design work and paintings show that I am comfortable with a variety of styles and subjects. The diversity in my work reflects the diversity of my interests and hobbies. I believe that an invigorating design or a beautiful painting is impossible, if its creator does not have an appreciation for the beauty of the subject. Michael Leidel, USA.
